Step back to 1911 with vintage automobiles lining the street, flags, Peace Maidens, and a parade afterwards at the Harris Pavilion. Of all the symbols associated with Easter the egg, the symbol of fertility and new life, is the most identifiable. The customs and traditions of using eggs have been associated with Easter for centuries. Originally Easter eggs were painted with bright colors to represent the sunlight of spring and were used in Easter-egg rolling contests or given as gifts. After they were colored and etched with various designs the eggs were exchanged by lovers and romantic admirers, much the same as valentines. In medieval time eggs were traditionally given at Easter to the servants. In Germany eggs were given to children along with other Easter gifts. Different cultures have developed their own ways of decorating Easter eggs. Crimson eggs, to honor the blood of Christ, are exchanged in Greece. In parts of Germany and Austria green eggs are used on Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday). Slavic peoples decorate their eggs in special patterns of gold and silver. Austrian artists design patterns by fastening ferns and tiny plants around the eggs, which are then boiled. The plants are then removed revealing a striking white pattern. The Poles and Ukrainians decorate eggs with simple designs and colors. A number of eggs are made in the distinctive manner called pysanki (to design, to write). Pysanki eggs are a masterpiece of skill and workmanship. Melted beeswax is applied to the fresh white egg. It is then dipped in successive baths of dye. After each dip wax is painted over the area where the preceding color is to remain. Eventually a complex pattern of lines and colors emerges into a work of art. In Germany and other countries eggs used for cooking where not broken, but the contents were removed by piercing the end of each egg with a needle and blowing the contents into a bowl. The hollow eggs were dyed and hung from shrubs and trees during the Easter Week. The Armenians would decorate hollow eggs with pictures of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and other religious designs.

The lawn of the Manassas Museum will be the scene of the 35th annual Edgar Rohr Memorial Car Meet on Saturday, Sept. 18. Vehicles of many types will be on display: antiques, classics, street rods, trucks, motorcycles -- even military vehicles. Awards or trophies will be presented in 21 classes, as well as in six "best of" categories. The car show begins at 10:00 A.M, and runs until 3:00 P.M. It will be held "rain or shine". Spectator admission is free.
The event is sponsored by the Bull Run Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America. It all takes place in historic Old Town Manassas, Va., where you'll find a number of other events going on as well. The seventh annual Old World Festival, the farmers market, a sidewalk sale by downtown merchants -- all will take place within a block or two of our show. And the new Manassas Wine & Arts Festival is only a short walk from the show field. Of course, Old Town Manassas has many interesting shops and restaurants to visit.
Free parking (in a covered garage just across the street from the car show) makes your visit a carefree one. This year we're proud to welcome Miss Virginia American Sweetheart to the show field, as well as Manassas Mayor Harry J. "Hal" Parrish II, who will present the new "Mayor's Trophy". Midway through the show, there'll be a demonstration by Model T Ford enthusiasts, of how quickly they can assemble one of those cars from a bunch of parts, and then drive it off!

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious food that is enjoyed by a full 90% of the nation's population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."
The International Ice Cream Association (IICA) encourages retailers and consumers to celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month. In 2009, National Ice Cream Day will be Sunday, July 19.
The U.S. ice cream industry generates more than $21 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. About 9% of all the milk produced by U.S. dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, contributing significantly to the economic well-being of the nation's dairy industry.
Founded in 1900, IICA is the trade association for manufacturers and distributors of ice cream and other frozen dessert products. The association's activities range from legislative and regulatory advocacy to market research, education and training. Its 80 member companies manufacture and distribute an estimated 85% of the ice cream and frozen dessert products consumed in the United States. IICA is a constituent organization of IDFA.

See Union and Confederate troops portrayed in an encampment representing the raw soldiers of the summer of 1861 on the Henry Hill battlefield. Demonstrations of musketry and artillery firing will echo over the grassy fields where the combat raged 148 years ago. Soldier life demonstrations will describe the experience of citizen soldiers, naive amateurs in their baptism of fire, encountering their "first gunpowder christening." U.S. Marine Battalion exhibits will illuminate the uniforms and equipment of Civil War Marines. Replica colors or flags of regiments in the colorful confusion of the battle will be unfurled, and impressions of Union and Confederate uniforms will depict the "fog of war" the muddle of confusion in the reek of smoke on the battlefield. Park Ranger tours will be conducted over the ground where bravery and sacrifice was witnessed in what the raw troops, "as green as grass" believed would be the "only battle of the war," only to be sobered by the carnage revealed in the brutal combat.

July is N ational Hot Dog Month, and according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, Americans will be consuming the infamous little red tubes of "meat" in record numbers this summer.The Council estimates that over seven billion hot dogs will be eaten by Americans between Memorial Day and Labor Day. During the July 4th weekend alone (the biggest hot-dog holiday of the year), 155 million will be downed.Every year, Americans eat an average of 60 hot dogs each. They are clearly one of the country's most loved, but most misunderstood, comfort foods. Below you'll find some frequently asked questions regarding the hot dog. How did the hot dog get its name?
The term "hot dog" is credited to sports cartoonist Tad Dorgan. At a 1901 baseball game at the Polo Grounds in New York, vendors began selling hot dachsund sausages in rolls.By law, a hot dog can contain up to 3.5 percent of "non-meat ingredients." Don't be scared. This is usually just some type of milk or soy product used to add to the nutritional value. Many hot dogs may be relatively high in fat and sodium, but they are also a good source of protein, iron, and other necessary vitamins.
What is the most popular condiment for a hot dog?
Council research shows that for adults, mustard is the condiment of choice, while children prefer ketchup. That said, preferences do change from region to region. For instance, hot dogs in New York are generally served with a lighter mustard and steamed onions, while Chicago hot dogs can come with mustard, relish, onions, tomato slices, or pretty much anything at all.Kids were also asked what condiment they would use "if their moms weren't watching," and 25 percent opted for chocolate sauce.
Do I spread my condiment on the meat or on the bread?
Always dress the dog and not the bun. The Council also recommends the following order for condiment application: first wet (mustard for example), then chunky (relish or onions), then cheese if desired, then any spices.
Is every hot dog bun the same?
The short answer is no. In the U.S., there are two kinds of hot dog buns that are popular in different regions: top-loaded and side-loaded. In New England, hot dogs are served in a top-loaded bun. Top-loaded buns are buttered on the side and split open on top. These buns are also often used to make lobster rolls. Outside of New England, the common type of hot dog bun is the side-loaded, meaning they are split open on the side.

What you need to know: Fireworks and the Law

The City of Manassas Park Fire Marshal’s Office vows to make the City a “Fireworks safe Community” through increased enforcement of the City’s Fire Prevention Code.

Any firework, which emits a flame, sparks or explodes or moves under its own power to distances greater than twelve (12) feet or performs as a projectile are prohibited by the City of Manassas Parks’ Fire Prevention Code.

Only approved legal fireworks may be discharged in the City of Manassas Park. Before you purchase fireworks, make sure you purchase them at permitted stands through out the Northern Virginia area. We have a permitted fireworks vendor located in the Manassas Park shopping center every year. Purchasing fireworks from vendors without permits places you at risk of buying unapproved and illegal fireworks.

Possession of unapproved fireworks is prohibited in the City. Unapproved fireworks may be confiscated and the person possessing them can be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor. Penalties include fines up to $ 2,500 and or one-year in jail.

The City will be providing a Public Firework display at Signal Hill Park on July 4th.

Fireworks Safety Tips
Even legal fireworks can be dangerous. Take special precaution to celebrate safely on the Fourth of July. Here are some helpful tips.

• Always have a responsible adult present. Only adults should ignite fireworks.
• Place them on a flat surface, clear of any combustible material and clear of all buildings.
• Never throw fireworks
• Never ignite fireworks while holding them.
• Never try to relight fireworks that have not functioned properly.
• Keep a bucket of water near by in case of a malfunction.

Remember:
Misuse of fireworks causing death, injury or property loss shall incur civil or criminal liability.

Rolling Thunder is an annual motorcycle rally that is held in Washington, DC during the Memorial Day weekend to call for the government's recognition and protection of Prisoners of War (POWs) and those Missing in Action (MIAs). About 400,000 veterans will roar across Washington, DC on their motorcycles as a tribute to American war heroes

Sunday, May 24, 2009. Departure from the Pentagon at 12 p.m. Speaker Program and Musical Tribute 1:30 p.m. at the Reflecting Pool across from The Lincoln Memorial. Thousands of motorcycles ride through Washington in an annual demonstration seeking to improve veteran benefits and resolve POW/MIA issues.

The Manassas Farmers' Market is located in Old Town Manassas.

This Market has been serving Manassas for 23 years and always opens on the first Thursday in April and the first Saturday in April.

The Thursday Market is located inside the Harris Pavilion, 9201 Center Street and closes after the first Thursday in November. The Saturday Market is located in parking lot B beside the Train Depot and will remain open until the last Saturday before Thanksgiving.

Both locations are in the heart of Old Town. The best of the freshest local produce at an open-air market.
